The newspaper article "Daylight, cool air boost test scores" below is a reprint of an article that appeared in a recent issue of USA Today. Part of it deals with a 1992 study on natural light (Vita-Lite) in five Alberta, Canada, schools.

The study confirmed once again that natural light is beneficial...no surprise at all to anyone at Duro-Test.

Two earlier studies, also in Alberta, showed much the same thing.

From 1981-1985 and again from 1986-1989, studies were conducted with 700 elementary school students (grades one through six) in two schools. Duro-Test's Vita-Lite fluorescents were used in the experimental school and standard cool white tubes were used in the control school.

The results under Vita-Lite lighting showed:
1. Significantly lower student noise levels in the library.
2. Significantly more positive mood of students.
3. Significantly reduced absences for students (9.40 days per school year per student).

The follow-up study, which was much more intensive and detailed than the first one, showed:
1. Lighting has a profound effect on students' education achievement.
2. The best attendance was under Vita-Lite (3.5 fewer days of absences per year).
3. The greatest gains in academic achievement (basic skills) were under Vita-Lite.

Academic achievement was lower under cool white.
Thirty-two years after its introduction, Vita-Lite is still the best!
